A designer is: a visual communicator. At least in this branch of design. He is a Communicator because his job is to communicate a message. And the means by which he communicae is the VISUAL (although we can also include audible means). And especially, he is a Designer because he is a aware of this, he studied for this and have the tools to solve a problem of visual communication.

I could wax-lyrical about bouncing from left-brain to right-brain and all that, but when it comes down I just like tinkering.

I'm not such a designer, but kind have similar problem (if it's one). I like so many different thing, that I cannot work on the same thing for too long, because I am exciting to start another idea I have and usually in a different domain.
As now, I'm working as a TD Artist, but I also have big interest in VFX (and moving slowly to that) but I also like to develop stuff, (as tools, or apps, services) as learning too
My biggest issue I think it's there is only 24hour in a day (the second issue is "I'm not as smart as I'd like" so all this stuff take me a lot a lot of time). Some how I think I do need challenge and new stuff to come all the time, and discovery stuff as well, that's how I have the feeling of evolving. in another hand that makes me not a specialist on any domain which could be bad as well I guess

It's a tough question to answer and my response usually varies depending on my task for that day or project.

We designers wear a lot of hats and I've tried throwing all the titles and labels together to come up with something that encompasses everything but have not had much success. The closest I've come is "Digital Creative" but it's just another label you end up explaining. It also doesn't cover physical media like art and illustration.

Sounds like an interesting presentation Mark. Will something be online later?

Cheers

We search for the emotional core of our project(s) using our own life experiences, our own attitudes about life & our innate vision to see what isn't there in order personify that project visually.

Thanks Jerzy

An expansive and well thought out response and also at the heart if what I am trying to get at. The moving away from labels and looking at what are the inate qualities of what we do, not necessarily how we do it.

The closest thing that comes to my mind is "technical artist" and this "job description" is quite recent for me. Before that I used to say "I solve problems", but I always had to do a lot of explaining. For some reason some guys even thought I can help them with their mother-in-law situation.

For me good design is not only the graphic outcome. It's also a way to get there, a workflow, a pipeline, a creative tool that allows you get the result you want. That is why I still consider myself as a designer, even though I can't draw my way out of a square box, but I can describe it with math or any other formula.

I know how things work or how they should work. I see formulas and patterns everywhere. I can't draw, or paint, or even animate by hand, but I can describe what I see or what I want in a way that computer understands, so in the end not only I get the result I want, but also my creation is reusable and can be released to the public as a new way of doing things, which hopefully improves the way they do their job.

I believe that everything can be described as a formula. Even a good artistic design that I'm personally not able to do... yet. I just haven't found the formula yet, but I know it's there. It's like The Matrix. Theres to many information to decode the Matrix, so you have to look at the code, but with time you learn to see the small things: blondes, brunettes, redheads...

I hope that by sharing my work, creating tools and revealing new workflows I have influence over the way other artists do they work.

Above that I hope this answer meets your expectations. Take care.
