hi mark,

are the fonts you use, especially made for the certain project, or do you use existing fonts?
your work is an everyday inspiration for my work as a gui designer! i wish i could do a gui like yours for a real client. greets

Hi,

I was wondering about the same kind of questions that Minu asked.
Im in my final year of study doing computer science at university and this looks like a really interesting area to work.

Hello Matt,
I'd like to start by saying your work is such a delicious treat! It's really something special.

As a designer myself I'd like to ask:
1. Where do you draw your inspirations?
2. What tools do you use to digitally collect and organize inspirations for your work?

A good question and personally there are several reason for it. They are not 'official' in any design sense, but part of my thinking.

The corner bevel is a handy little device. Without it, it is just a bar of color. The problem you have on-screen, is that subleties are lost. The camera rarely lingers and does not go in that close. You have to imply that something is something or does something by other means. In user interface work this is called affordance. You can use the same techniques in the screens to quickly and visually say this is or does something. It is not just a bar, it is a title, a tab, a button. You cannot see the fine edge beveling on the button and you do not want to use too distracting colors as the focus should be elsewhere on screen.

The other reason of course is inspiration. I always loved what people like The Designers Republic did for games like Wipeout and have always enjoyed integrating elements like that into the work.

One thing that I am curious about is how many fake user interfaces have at least one beveled corner to look cool, but I personally cannot see the practical point. Does the lopped off triangle reserve space like the resize corner of the Mac OS user interface? Does it serve to highlight the way the widget is superimposed over the other elements of the display? Or is it merely used because it is now a sort of shorthand for "this is in the future"?

I honestly am curious about these design choices, especially if there was some thought put into them. Thanks!

Oh, and I add my voice to the chorus of praise for the designs.

Absolutely gorgeous. I only hope that one day we will all be computing on such slick looking interfaces.

Thanks for the good note.

Terminator Salvation was not me. As far as I know, the screens in the labs were done by Asylum and the Vision systems by Imaginary Forces.

Cheers Mark
